Who is the “Happiest Girl in Town”?

02 Jun

Almost 70 years ago, there was a young comedy actor, named Irene Ryan, who was known for her vaudeville and radio talents. About 20 years later, she was offered a TV role that changed her life. Before you read further, watch her sing in this 2-minute clip from the full-length, comedy, musical Hot Rhythm (1944).  Hmmm, where have you seen that face and heard that voice before?

Did you watch it? She was funny and cute, right? Irene Ryan, better known now as “Granny” on the Beverly Hillbillies TV series, was a busy gal in early Hollywood, partnering with her actor husband, Tim Ryan. As a comedy team, they were successful for about 20 years. Irene was called the “gal who makes Bob Hope laugh,” and obviously, the rest of us. Miss ya, Granny!
