LEGO…Up High in the Sky!

In 1932…in Manhattan, New York…sixty-nine floors up…on top of Rockefeller Center, the first photo was taken by Charles C. Ebbets, showing men eating their lunches while sitting on a skyscraper girder. In my research, two titles come up for this image: “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” and “Men on a Beam.”

Over eighty years later, down on a much safer and lower level, Balakov, a computer programmer and photographer, reconstructed “Men on a Beam” (second photo) using LEGO! Obviously, this modern representation is not as extraordinary as the original, but it illustrates how famous and well-loved Ebbets’ image of early NY has become.
