Ray Bradbury’s book, “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” was published in 1962. I don’t remember at what age I read it first, but I loved it! When I came across this picture of actor Marlene Dietrich and a very young Bradbury, it immediately flashed me back to the time when I read his new novel, cover to cover, quicker than you can say the book’s title! I recall my exact feelings as I followed along with Bradbury’s unsuspecting characters, Will and Jim, into Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show. A traveling carnival intent on luring young lives into a world of nightmares! Meeting the macabre Mr. Dark is Will and Jim’s first step down to where wishes can have a considerable cost.
The line, “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” is from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” I remember repeating it over and over as it was such a creepy phrase with which to terrorize my younger sister.
By the way, the young characters of the book are fourteen, just one year younger than fifteen-year-old Bradbury in the picture above. If you would like to know more about the Bradbury and Dietrich photo, please visit io9’s site.
Let me know if you join Will and Jim on their perilous path. I hope you come back!!
